We Specialise In

Our audiologist and support staff will assist you with professional and friendly service at our 7 branches. We supply a wide range of constantly evolving hearing aids to suit different types of hearing losses and budgets to suit every person’s lifestyle, physical dexterity, communication needs and demand and personal preferences.

Hearing Tests

Comprehensive audiology tests
This series of tests is customized according to your age and abilities. It includes an otoscopic examination, where the ear canal and eardrum are examined with an otoscope. During this test, your audiologist is able to visually assess the ear canal and eardrum.

Your audiologist will also conduct an assessment of the middle and ear with a test called tympanometry. She will insert a small probe into the outer area of the ear canal, where measurements will be taken. These measurements are presented in the form of tympanograms, and provide information about the functions of middle ear.

Corporate Hearing Tests

This service is specifically designed for businesses to safeguard employee hearing in diverse work environments. It comprises a series of evaluations tailored to the occupational demands and noise exposures of your workplace. During the screening, your audiologist performs a thorough assessment to detect early signs of hearing loss and identify potential hazards.

Your hearing specialist will also administer tests that measure sound sensitivity and overall auditory performance. A brief consultation follows, during which measurements are reviewed and personalized recommendations for hearing conservation are provided. These insights support a proactive approach to maintaining a safe and healthy auditory environment at work.

Supply & Fitting of Hearing Aids and Accessories

The first step in overcoming your hearing problem, is admitting to yourself and loved ones that your hearing problem is affecting your quality of life.

Hearing aids are very effective at improving the hearing of those with hearing loss. They work by amplifying soundwaves in the ear. The type of hearing aid you need depends on the type of hearing loss you have, as well as the severity of your condition. Speak to your audiologist about the best option to suit your needs.

Hearing Aid Maintenance

With any investment, there is a degree of maintenance required to be sure money was well spent and the purchase is well kept. Hearing aids aren’t any different. While there are things that only the manufacturer or your hearing healthcare professional should do, there are many preventative measures that you can take to ensure your hearing aid is well maintained.

There are several simple home-care steps you can take to keep your hearing aids in top condition. Take a look at this guide for morning, evening and weekly tips. This guide also includes useful tips on cleaning, storage and troubleshooting.

Keep in mind that your hearing aid Operation Manual is online, as well as battery information and more.

Baby Testing

It is possible to perform hearing tests on infants as soon as 24 hours after birth.

Your audiologist will place a small probe into your baby’s ear canal, through which soft sounds are sent. The response from your baby’s hearing organs will then be measured and recorded. The test is very simple and painless, and can take place while your baby is asleep.

Because babies learn to speak by listening to others, it is important to pick up on hearing problems as early as possible. Hearing loss that is not detected can lead to slow development of speech and language, which in turn can result in problems later in your child’s life.

Paediatric Testing

Signs & Symptoms of a Hearing Impairment in Children:

* The child may experience frequent ear infections.
* The child may find it difficult to identify or locate certain sounds.
* The child may watch TV at a really high volume.
* The child may have behavioural issues, displaying inattentiveness and disruptive behaviour.
* The child’s speech may sound different.
* The child’s vocabulary may consist many words that are often missing endings.

Industrial Testing

Hearing loss can occur when one is exposed to sound levels greater than 85 decibels. Hearing loss in the workplace is a compensable disease, as per the terms set out in Schedule 3 of the Compensation for Occupation Injuries and Disease Act (COID).

All workers should undergo medical surveillance, as per the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA). As part of this medical surveillance, workers are entitled to hearing tests to check their hearing function and to identity any damage to their hearing over time. Those who work in conditions where they are exposed to noise levels of over 85 decibels should have hearing tests at least once a year, while those who are exposed to noise levels above 105 decibels should be tested every six months.

Noise Protection

When we are exposed to harmful noise – sounds that are too loud or loud sounds that last a long time – sensitive structures in our inner ear can be damaged, causing noise-induced hearing loss. These sensitive structures, called hair cells, are small sensory cells that convert sound energy into electrical signals that travel to the brain. Once damaged, our hair cells cannot grow back. Noise-induced hearing loss is irreversible, and there is no cure.

Noise-induced hearing loss can be caused by a one-time exposure to an intense impulse sound, such as an explosion, or by continuous exposure to loud sounds over an extended period of time, such as noise generated in a mine or factory, or those who shoot regularly.

Hearing Rehabilitation

While hearing aids can have a significant and positive effect on one’s quality of life, it is important to bear in mind that it can take time and effort to fully adjust to your new device. For some, it can be difficult to accept the idea of using a hearing aid and it is quite normal for people to go through a period of denial when they are diagnosed with hearing loss. However, a desire and determination to improve your hearing and communication goes a long way in the journey towards dealing with hearing loss.

At the Hearing House, we are dedicated to helping our patients with hearing rehabilitation, which includes helping you to adjust to your condition, manage communication, and teaching you to use and make the most of your hearing aid.

Tinnitus Management

Tinnitus (“TIN-a-tus” or “Tin-EYE-tus”) is the medical term for the sensation of hearing sound in your ears or head when no external sound is present.

Most people describe the sound as “ringing in ears,”. But it has also been describe it as hissing, buzzing, whistling, roaring and even chirping.

What causes it?
* Aging
* Ear Infection
* Head Injuries
* Expose to loud noises
* Medication side effects

Wax Removal and Ear Care

Good intentions to keep ears clean may be risking the ability to hear. The ear is a delicate and intricate area, including the skin of the ear canal and the eardrum. Therefore, special care should be given to this part of the body. Start by discontinuing the use of cotton-tipped applicators and the habit of probing the ears.

Cerumen or earwax is healthy in normal amounts and serves as a self-cleaning agent with protective, lubricating, and antibacterial properties. The absence of earwax may result in dry, itchy ears. Most of the time the ear canals are self-cleaning; that is, there is a slow and orderly migration of earwax and skin cells from the eardrum to the ear opening.
